Description

Note: This is part of the Intermediate Jewelry Series: Stone Setting. You can receive a discounted price for signing up for all 5 classes via this Link.

Students will learn how to set a cabochon gemstone onto a simple metal cutout with prongs to create a beautiful pendant. This class will review how to create turtle prongs.

Turtle prongs is a technique used to connect cabochons, enameled works, etc. to a designed piece of metal without a torch. This project will be cut from a sheet of metal and receives the name “turtle”  from the animal it resembles before the prongs are bent upwards to hold the gemstone; there are many possible variations for shape.

This class is perfect for starting your own torch-less home studio practice. At the end of this class series a 6th class will be offered as Open Studio Time to participating students involved in the series to finish class samples and ask questions.

Materials:

  • Allow $5 to $15 per class for materials. Material/kit fees are payable in cash to the instructor on the First day of class.
  • Instructor will have stones available for purchase and will provide the faceted gemstone with the materials kit as well as copper/brass/silver for purchase for each sample.  The cost of the material kit will be determined based upon your choice of materials.
  • Students are encouraged to bring in a selection of cabochons, gemstones, and sterling silver to class to set for each sample. The whole series will require 4 cabochons for classes: 3 round or oval cabochons and 1 odd shaped/square/rectangle cabochon, and two (2) 5mm faceted gemstones.
