Requires a Minimum of 2 participants.

This class will experiment various techniques for adding texture to metal such as roller printing and hammering. We will also discuss and add patinas to surfaces and find ways to highlight and emphasize the textures on jewelry.

Prerequisites: All individuals must be at least 18 years old. Students should have taken a beginning jewelry metalsmithing class or have equivalent experience and be familiar with the studio.

Description

Students will have the opportunity to try their hand at modifying an old hammer and create a signature texture for their collection. Then using this hammer and a variety of other hammers, we will experiment with various textures and finishes on metal.

Class will also review how to use the rolling mill to impress texture, pattern, etc. onto the surface of metal. Students are encouraged to bring in old ribbon, fabric, stencils, etc. to impress onto metals surfaces. Using samples from class; we will review liver of sulfur patinas for copper, brass and silver.

Tools: Students are welcome to bring their own hand tools such as files, pliers, hammers and any non-ferrous scrap metal to use for each class.

Students are also encouraged to purchase an inexpensive ball peen hammer or bring in an old hammer from home or Goodwill, etc. that we will modify.

Material/Kit fee: allow $5-$10 based on materials purchased from instructor.  Fee is due in cash to the instructor on the first day of class.

* Non-Ferrous Metals: In general practice, we group the softer metals and alloys as non-ferrous as many tools used are not designed for the harder (ferrous) metals. In metallurgy, non-ferrous metals are Copper, Silver, Gold, Tin, Zinc, Nickel, Aluminum, Titanium, Palladium, Niobium, Platinum, Lead. This also includes alloys that do not contain iron (ferrite) in appreciable amounts such as Brass, Bronze, Pewter, and more.
