Description
In this workshop we will explore painting or wet packing transparent enamels onto copper and fine silver disks, we will kiln fire them to a glossy glass finish. We will explore layering colors to create depth and using foils to create light in our pieces. We will use cloisonné wire to create shapes and patterns that will be filled with enamel. You may or may not end up with a finished piece, other silversmithing techniques may be needed to get the finished look you want. You will take home several samples and pieces for future work.
Important:
Tools to bring: #0 paint brush, a #1 and #3/0 might be nice to have also. Beading scissors are nice to have (the studio has wire cutters for students to use).
Agenda:
- How to prepare copper and fine silver for enameling: annealing, shaping, applying base and counter layers, how to sift enamel for base & counter layers.
- How to bend, shape and apply cloisonné wire to the prepared disks
- Wet packing: Edge control, blending & layering. How to fill the cloisonné cell with wet enamel.
- Finishing: grinding and fire polishing the surface for a beautiful finished piece.
