Description
In this workshop, we will review basic metalsmithing skills including a variety of rivets. We will use these skills to create an original layered pendant that sets a cabochon or faceted gemstone between two or more textured sheets of metal.Â
- Design principles are important to consider when creating an original piece of jewelry and will be discussed in preparation for students to plan their original design. Students will complete a rivet sample that includes a standard rivet, a flush rivet and a tube rivet. They will then utilize various design templates to complete sketches for the composition of their pendant. We will also consider how each type of rivet can both enhance and perform the functions necessary to complete their designed pendant.
- We will also review finishing techniques such as patinas and polishing to enhance the finished piece of jewelry. Students can choose to prepare textured brass, copper and/or silver via hammers or roller printing during to class to utilize in their design.
Materials fee includes brass and/or copper, however students can purchase sterling silver from the instructor to utilize in their pendant; sterling silver is not included in materials fee and will be priced at approximate wholesale cost from the instructor’s personal inventory. Gemstones will be provided in the material kit for the class.
