9/9/21 Silversmithing 101: Soldering

$180.00

Requires a Minimum of 2 participants.

Most jewelers fall in love with making jewelry at first light of the torch. Often, it is not until later that you realize you don’t fully understand what happens when you solder and you may be looking for advice on not melting your hard work. There is so much more to soldering that you realized. Sometimes soldering feels like magic and other times it feels like an epic failure. There are so many little things that could set you up for success and understanding the science behind soldering is just the starting point. During this class students will learn in-depth tricks and tips for soldering. Initially, students will create a sample for each type of solder joints in copper. Once students complete their sample, they will move onto soldering the same solder seams out of sterling silver. Students are encouraged to bring a series of sterling silver projects to solder with the instructor’s supervision. Throughout the duration of class students will learn how to complete standard soldering, stick soldering, pick soldering, and sweat soldering both on copper and on sterling silver.

Examples of sterling silver projects to bring to class include but are not limited to problem projects, rings, earring posts, bezels, wire designs, bails onto pendants, etc. Students are also welcome to bring any of their scrap silver to class to practice soldering skills. Otherwise, the instructor will have sterling silver available for purchase at current market value with the materials kit. Please reach out to the instructor via email if you have any questions about what to bring to class. Those that are not vaccinated should still wear a mask. Thank you.
